'My wife and I'

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is of course my job to do all the thank you’s. The first and biggest thank-you is to all of you. Thank you all for choosing to share today with us especially those who have travelled far and battled the elements to be here. Thank you to Presidente del Gobierno  Zapatero for taking swift action which resulted in getting those pesky air traffic controllers back to work so promptly, albeit at gunpoint.  We are delighted and touched to see all of you here.

Mi mujer y yo

Senoras y senores, es por supuesto mi trabajo el dar las gracias a todos vosotros.

El primero y el mas grande de ellos es para todos vosotros. Gracias por haber elegido compartir el dia de hoy con nosotros, especialmente los que habeis venido desde muy lejos batallando con los elementos  para estar aqui. Tambien doy las gracias al presidente Zapatero, tomando accion rapida para que los controladores aereos volviesen rapido a sus puestos de trabajo, aunque fuese apuntandoles con una pistola.

 Estamos encantados y muy emocionados de ver que todos estais aqui.

I’d personally like to thank Paco and Felicidad for making me feel so welcome right from the very moment I met them. For those of you who don’t know, ‘Felicicad’ is Spanish for ‘Happiness’ which is so appropriate for the Ortiz Perea family. Every time I have met the family there always seems to be a buzz of excitement in the air and plenty of laughter.

Personalmente  me gustaria agradecer a Paco y a Felicidad por hacerme sentir tan agusto y tan aceptado desde el primer momento que los conoci. Para todos aquellos que no lo saben, Felicidad en espanol significa Alegria, nombre muy apropiado para la familia Ortiz Perea. Siempre que he estado con esta familia  hay risas, carcajadas y alegria en el aire.

Silvia and I spent a weekend with Paco, Feli and Alba at a festival in Sevilla last year and then various excursions round wonderful sites in Andalucía. It was all go from first thing until the small hours of the morning and I loved how excited Paco & Feli were at showing me as many attractions as possible within the time we had.

After a long day of touring and site seeing at 3am in the Linares town square where they put on a temporary bar for one of the many Spanish festivals Paco bought me a whiskey and then turned and said to me in English ‘I love you, kiss kiss’. That’s the sort of welcoming I’m talking about.

Silvia y yo pasamos un fin de semana con Paco, Feli y Alba en la feria de Sevilla el anyo pasado y despues fuimos de excursion a muchos sitios por Andalucia.LLegamos de madrugada y no paramos en todo el dia..me encanto como de emocionados estaban Paco Y Feli ensenandome todo lo mas posible en tan poco tiempo. Despues de largo dia sin parar  acabamos a las 3 de la manana en Linares en un bar improvisado en mitad de la plaza del pueblo. Paco me invito a un whiskey, se giro y me dijo en ingles.. te quiero, besame , besame... este es el tipo de calurosa bienvenida que os estoy hablando.

I feel immensely fortunate to have married into such a great family. My sincere wish is that together Silvia and I can build a home that is as welcoming and as full of love and happiness as Paco and Felicidad’s is…....personally speaking I also quite like the idea of living in the South of Spain, sitting back with a glass of Rioja and a handful of olives.

I would like to assure Paco that I sincerely promise to take care of Silvia, treat her with respect and honour her for the rest of our lives,,,,oh and of course laugh at her jokes. ( and give her massages and take breakfast to bed every morning with coffee and oats, jajjajajja sorry eog)

Me siento inmensamente afortunado de casarme con una familia tan grande. Mi mas sincero deseo es que Silvia y yo podamos construir un hogar tan bueno, y lleno de amor y alegria como el hogar de Paco y Felicidad,hablando por mi, tambien no me importaria sentarme en una terraza con una copa de Rioja y un plato de aceitunas.

Me gustaria tambien reafirmar y prometer a Paco que sinceramente pienso cuidar de Silvia, tratarla con respeto y honorarla para el resto de nuestras vidas y por supuesto.. reirme de sus chistes malos,,( y darle masajes y llevarle el desayuno a la cama con  cereals con cafe..mm que rico.. mmm)

Mum and Dad, thanks for everything that you have given me during my life. And for all your help in planning today – we really couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks for bringing me up the way you have, for all of your encouragement and support throughout my life. But most of all thank you for instilling in me whatever it is that convinced Silvia that she wanted to marry me; on that score alone, I think you can be justifiably proud of yourselves; I am certainly proud to have you as my parents.

Mama y papa, gracias por todo lo que me habeis dado durante mi vida, y por ayudarme a planificar todo hoy, realmente no lo hubiese podido hacer sin vosotros. Gracias por criarme y educarme de la manera que lo habeis hecho y por todo el animo y el apoyo a traves de mi vida. Pero sobre todo quiero agradeceros por instigar en mi lo que sea que fuere que Silvia ha visto en mi convenciendola para que ella quiera casarse conmigo. Por esto solo, pienso que debereis estar muy orgullosos de vosotros mismos , tanto como yo lo estoy de que seais mis padres.

The bridesmaids; Alba and Lolyta, you both look beautiful and I know how much Silvia values the two of you for being here for her today.

A las damas de honor, Alba y Lolita estais super guapas y yo se cuanto Silvia valora que las dos esteis aqui con ella hoy.

I would also like to thank Candy Leslie for allowing us to use this stunning castle for our wedding. We were so fortunate to find such a place at so short notice and I think you will all agree we couldn’t have hoped for a more appropriate location. On pronouncing Silvia and my engagement, most of my friends said ‘ oh, fantastic a Spanish wedding, what part of Spain shall it be, I’ll have to make a holiday out of it’,,,,,,,well I could feel the disappointment on your faces when I responded with the ‘it’s being held at the North East of Scotland,,,,, in December’ But I think you’ll agree we are in quite magical surroundings even with the bad weather.  

Me gustaria tambien agradecer a Candy Leslie por permitirnos estar  y usar este incredible Castillo para nuestra boda. Hemos tenido mucha suerte de encontrarlo tan rapido y como espero que todos penseis que ,no podriamos haber encontrado un sitio mas apropiado y maravilloso. Cuando le conte a is amigos que Silvia y yo nos ibamos a casar dijeron “ ohh maravilloso una boda Espanola!!..en que parte de Espana sera..?? preguntaron ellos.... planearemos las vacaciones para esa fecha,, mm bueno me parece que sus caras cambiaron cuando les dije que seria en el noreste de Escocia,, en diciembre...pero no me negeis que no bastante magico el sitio este a pesar del mal tiempo.

Whilst I was preparing this speech I came across a series of questions for brides. One in particular caught my eye. The question was “If your groom didn’t turn up would you, as tradition dictates, marry the best man” Fortunately for me, I think Roddy may have been a difficult candidate to convince.

Mientras preparaba este discurso me encontre una serie de preguntas para las novias.Una en particular me llamo la atencion. La pregunta era: Si tu novio no aparece, te casarias como la tradicion manda con el padrino del novio?, afortunadamente para  mi pienso que Roddy va a ser un candidato dificil de convencer.. jajaj

Roddy, it’s an honour to have you as my best man today and thank you so much for all the hard work and preparation you have put in. I knew I had chosen the right man for the job when a few weeks ago we were going over various things for the wedding. Before I knew what had happened in true Roderick style he had prepared an excel spreadsheet, sent it out to the family with tasks and responsibilities marked out with milestones and deadlines. It wasn’t until earlier this week I realised that very managerially Roddy had delegated all the tasks out,,,,,, Roddy what were your tasks again?

Roddy, es un honor que tu seas mi padrino hoy y agradecerte el trabajo duro que has hecho con tanta preparacion. Se que he elegido el hombre correcto para tanta cosa, cuando hace unas semanas  iba yo organizando algunas cosas para la boda,antes que yo me diese cuenta El ya habia preparado un archivo escel con toda la informacion y tareas necesarias al mas puro estilo Roderick dandonos todo esto detallado, personalizado y con fechas limites. No me di cuenta hasta principios de esta semana  que el Gran jefe Roddy habia delegado todas sus tareas.  Roddy cuales eran tus tareas??

Funnily enough I have known Roddy all my life, and he has always been there when I needed him, especially throughout university in Glasgow where more often than not Roddy had to help top up my weekly budget because I thought it was a good idea to go to the student union on a Tuesday night instead of going food shopping. Beer or super noodles? always was a tough decision for me. 

Para mi asombro llevo conociendo a Roddy toda mi vida, y siempre ha estado ahi cuando lo necesite, especialmente durante los anos de la universidad en Glasgow, donde con mucha frecuencia Roddy me tenia que suplir y aumentar el presupuesto seminal porque yo siempre tenia la feliz idea de ir al bar de la Universidad los martes en lugar  de ir a hacer la compra al supermercado.. mmm cerveza o tallarines.. ?? siempre  fue una decision dificil para mi.

I should perhaps just mention at this point that Roddy suffers from a rare medical condition which, makes him prone to embellishment. He often invents the most fanciful stories, which he sincerely believes to be true. I hope that you will all bear this in mind when he stands up to deliver his speech.

Quizas deberia en este momento advertir que Roddy sufre de una condicion medica extrana la cual hace que distorsione y embellezca historias. A veces el se inventa estas historias y lo peor de todo  es que se las cree. Recordad esto cuando sea su turno de decir el discurso.

Later on in the evening we shall be pulling back the chairs, creating space and throwing a dancing competition, may the best man win.

Mas tarde esta tarde, luego quitaremos las sillas y crearemos un espacio organizando un concurso de baile, seguro que el padrino gana.

Now,,,,on to my wonderful wife....(raise glass)

Ahora .. sobre mi maravillosa mujer.. ( levantar vuestras copas un brindis.)

Silvia and I met in Glasgow, over five years ago and since then countless serendipities have brought us together again and again.

Silvia y yo nos conocimos en Glasgow hace mas o menos unos 5 anos y algo y desde entonces incontables casualidades nos han juntado y unido una y otra vez.

Many people have asked Silvia and I where we met, usually with some exotic place in mind, this of course is quite true. The 1^st time I saw Silvia was in the romantic location of Morrison’s in Partick whilst packing my bags of beer and super noodles. I remember saying to my friend something along the lines of, (Doric) ‘awwww mee wid ye look at that! she has to be Spanish or French, I’d be a happy man by her side.’ Silvia of course had no idea of this Scottish pervert drooling over her across the check out.

Mucha gente  me ha preguntado donde Silvia y yo nos conocimos, normalmente piensan que va a ser un sitio super exotico, y   es cierto, la primera vez que vi a Silvia fue en el sitio super exotico y romantico de Morrisons,(un supermercado en Partick) mientras empaquetaba mis bolsas con cervezas y super tallarines. Recuerdo que le decia a mi amigo  algo asi como.. (en Doric) mira esa,,,tiene que ser Espanola o francesa, yo seria un hombre feliz con una chica asi a mi lado. Silvia, por supuesto no tenia ni idea de que un escoces pervertido estaba babeando cuando ella estaba pagando en la caja de al lado.

The following week I bumped into a friend of a friend crossing the street with his girlfriend at the time,,this of course was none other than the girl from the supermarket,,,,,,,,,,ppppplease to meet you I’m Eoghain,,,,the pervert from the supermarket went through my mind.

A la semana siguiente me encontre de casualidad con un amigo que iba con su novia cruzando una calle, y por supuesto no podia ser otra que la chica del supermercado la que iba con el.Ennnnccannnntado de conocerte soy Eoghain el pervertido del supermercado,, ( eso cruzo por mi mente)

A few weeks went by until our next chance encounter, which was at the cinema where I found myself sitting behind Silvia and,,,,yes her boyfriend,,,an embarrassing pattern seemed to be emerging,,,hi I’m Eoghain your local stalker.

Las semanas fueron pasando hasta nuestro siguiente encuentro, que fue en el cine, donde acabe sentado detras de Silvia y ... si si, su novio .. parecia que el vergonzoso  personaje estaba emergiendo,, hola,, soy Eoghain ,, tu acosador de la ciudad..

My persistence seemed to pay off however, as the next time I met Silvia was when I returned home to my flat after a couple of ales only to find a wee party going on in the kitchen with of course the Spanish / French hotty there! This time without her boyfriend!!! Well he was there but they had just split up,,,was it the day before,,, Silvia? Wanting to strike while the iron was hot and of course whilst full of Dutch courage I proceeded to woo Silvia and gave her my 1^st gift of a coffee cup, she was defenceless to the old Fiddes wit and charm, although the ex boyfriend of a day was not so enamoured with my advances.

Pero mi persistencia parece que por fin tuvo efecto, ya que la proxima vez que yo vi a Silvia fue cuando volvia a mi casa despues de un par de cervezas  encontrandome en mi casa una pequena fiesta que habia en la cocina, y por supuesto la guapa chica Espanola/francesa estaba alli.Y esta vez sin su novio, bueno si estaba,pero  habian roto el dia anterior. Asi que aproveche mientras la hierba estaba fresco y buscando  fuerzas de flaqueza me decidi a enamorar a Silvia y darle a ella mi primer regalo, una taza de cafe. Ella  sucumbio sin defensa alguna ante el encanto y la belleza del Viejo Fiddes, aunque su exboyfriend  de hace un dia no estaba muy feliz con mis avances.

We finally had our 1^st date some weeks on, after another chance encounter on Woodlands Road and I knew from then I had met someone very special indeed.

Finalmente quedamos en nuestra primera cita semanas mas tarde, despues de otro encuentro fortuito en Woodlands Road, yo sabia desde entonces que iba a conocer a alguien muy especial.

As you know Silvia and I have lived apart for many years, both fulfilling dreams that have led us to different parts of the world. With the exception of Glasgow in 2005 and Gran Canaria 2009, we have always lived a long way from each other – clocking up many cities or countries between us. Much of our relationship has been spent on planes, trains and in cars.

Como ya sabeis todos Silvia y yo hemos vivido separados muchos anos de nuestras vidas, ambos cumpliendo nuestros suenos que nos  han conducido a diferentes partes de este mundo. Con la excepcion de los meses de Glasgow en 2005 y lo que vivimos juntos en Gran Canaria en 2009, hemos siempre vivido muy alejados uno del otro con muchos paises y ciudades entre nosotros. La mayoria de nuestra relacion la hemos pasado entre aviones, trenes y coches.

In 2008 I arrived in New Zealand to work for a year. It was whilst there Silvia travelled half way round the world to spend time with me and for us to find out where we were to go together, which turned out to be the most important time of my life. I remember Bruce telling me there, that New Zealand was a place where you could lose yourself and find yourself,,,,wise words Bruce,,, I believe I was lost until Silvia made that journey over to me so many miles away.

En el 2008, llege a Nueva Zelanda para trabajar alli un ano.

Cuando yo estaba alli fue cuando  Silvia se recorrio mitad de este mundo para pasar un tiempo alli conmigo, por nosotros, para poder encontrar donde ir juntos, este tiempo  se convirtio en el momento mas importante de mi vida. Recuerdo que cuando estabamos alli  recuerdo que Bruce me dijo.. Nueva Zelanda es un sitio donde te puedes perder y encontrar tu ser, sabias palabras Bruce. Yo crei que estaba perdido hasta que Silvia hizo ese viaje hacia mi con tantos kilometros  de distancia.

Our adventures in New Zealand certainly were eventual and from the moment we met again it felt like we had never been apart. Being the incurable romantic that I am I had booked a small batch in New Zealand on a secluded Island called Waiheke. On approach to the batch through winding forest roads I thought it was a good idea to blind fold Silvia for maximum surprise effect, this didn’t quite go to plan forgetting that Silvia is prone to car sickness from time to time. The next day was a planned fishing trip for the 2 of us on a boat which I had chartered, not realising that Silvia also was prone to sea sickness, this didn’t stop her catching 6 red snappers and 2 trout, putting myself and the boat owner to shame. Whale watching was another wonderful experience where we both became sea sick this time amidst bouts of laugh attacks, and the whole boat thinking we were mental. Even with the sea sickness we managed to have a whale of a time.

Nuestras aventuras en Nueva Zelanda fueron cruciales y desde el momento que nos encontramos alli otra vez nunca nos hemos vuelto a separar. Siendo un romantico empedernido reserve una cabana en una isla perdida de la mano de dios que se llamaba Waiheke.  Acercandonos a la cabana a traves de  carreteras llenas de curvas y bosques.. le puse a Silvia Una benda en los ojos para aumentar la sorpresa, lo unico que se me olvido en mi plan es que Silvia de vez en cuando se marea en los coches ...Al dia siguiente, planee un viaje en barco para ir a pescar, volvi a olvidar que Silvia  de vez en cuando se marea en los barcos...aunque esto no le paro para pescar 6 morenas  y 2 truchas haciendonos pasar verguenza a mi y al dueno del barco.

Luego otro dia fuimos a ver ballenas, otra maravillosa aventura aunque esta vez fuimos los dos los que nos pusimos malisimos entre vomitos y ataques de risa de ver lo ridiculos que estabamos siendo los dos unicos que estaban vomintando dentro mientras que todos veian las ballenas fuera. La gente del barco pensaban que estabamos locos, pero a pesar de tanto vomito nos lo pasamos genial.. ( en espanol no tiene sentido lo que he dicho antes.. de nos lo pasamos como las ballenas)

Silvia and I have often found ourselves in our own little bubble where the rest of the world can’t seem to penetrate our space. After not taking part in a quiz night in waiheke Island and deciding to just bleather amongst ourselves we realised that the whole bar was looking at us because the quiz master had just announced a special prize was to be presented to us for ignoring him all night and we hadn’t noticed. Later that week we took part in the Kiwi activity of ‘Zorbing’ where we really were in our own bubble. Basically the two of us inside a giant plastic bubble half full of water getting sent rolling down a huge hill, I was just glad that Silvias motion sickness didn’t occur inside the zorb!

Silvia y yo a veces nos encontramos en nuestra pequena propia burbuja donde el resto del mundo no puede penetrar en ella.

Una vez en un pub de la isla de Waiheke, no participamos en un concurso que habia de preguntas y respuestas, y decidimos hablar de nosotros y nuestras cosas hasta que nos dimos cuenta que todo el bar no estaba mirando  ya que el presentador del concurso nos habia dado un premio  especial a nosotros por ignorarlo toda la noche.

Despues esa semana nos montamos en una cosa que la gente de Nueva Zelanda llama Zorb, ahi si que estabamos en nuestra gran burbuja de plastico..Basicamente es una bola de plastico con nosotros dentro ,un poco de agua y rodando Montana abajo... me alegro enormemente de que Silvia no se marease esta vez dentro del Zorb.

Silvia is always up for trying anything new and exciting, she treats every moment as a gift and greats every situation with a smile. Her energy is infectious and even when I can sometimes be a grumpy ‘botach’ at times, she always manages to bring out the best in me.

Silvia siempre esta probando cosas nuevas y excitantes, ella vive cada momento como un regalo y saluda cada situacion con una sonrisa. Su energia es contagiosa incluso cuando yo soy un grunon a veces. Ella siempre consigue sacar lo mejor de mi.

All of you I’m sure have experienced Silvias laugh attacks and how infectious they can be there shall probably be many to come today. What you may not be aware of is that this does not only occur in the conscious hours, and many a time I have awoken to Silvia laughing in her sleep. Being a sleep walker and talker for many years I put it down to the fact I must be telling the most awesome jokes to her in my sleep,

like the one about the guy who walks into the psychiatrist wearing only cling film for shorts. The shrink says, "Well, I can clearly see you're nuts."

Estoy seguro que todos habeis experimentado los ataques de risa de Silvia y como de contagiosos son, estoy seguro que hoy tendra unos cuantos..Lo que no sabeis es que esto no solo ocurre cuando esta consciente.. mas de una vez me he despertado con un ataque de risa suyo mientras duerme. Siendo un sonambulo y hablador por muchos anyos me he llegado a creer que debe de contarle los chistes mas increibles mientras ella duerme. Como el del tio que va a un psiquiatra llevando papel trasparente de envolver alimentos como si fuesen pantalones cortos . el psiquiatra el dice... se te van las bolas,,

Or the one about the man who walks into doctor's office.
"What seems to be the problem?" asks the doctor.
"It's ... um ... well ... I have five penises," replies the man.
"Blimey!" says the doctor, "How do your trousers fit?"
"Like a glove."

But the truth is, that, even when we have been a long way apart, I have felt that a part of Silvia has always gone with me. And that’s why our marriage – whilst being the biggest commitment I have ever made – was also the easiest …because above all else, she is my soul mate and my best friend.

Pero la verdad es que aunque hemos estado mucho tiempo separados siempre he sentido que una parte de Silvia ha ido siempre conmigo. Y eso es por lo que nuestro matrimonio, que es de lo mas grande que he hecho nunca  tambien es lo mas facil, porque a parte de todo ella es mi companera del alma y mi mejor amiga.

So you’ll be glad to hear that I’ve come to my final thank you. Silvia, thank you for marrying me. I am devoted to you, I have so much to thank you for, and I love you with all of my heart. You look absolutely stunning today, but then, you look stunning to me every day. It’s been a long road, but we got there in the end and I know that whatever the future holds we’ll live it happily together. To quote some words from Robert Burns: 'Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be.'

Todos estareis felices de oir que ya llego al final de este largo agradecimiento. Gracias Silvia por casarte conmigo, me dedico a ti, tengo tanto por agradecerte, y te amo con todo mi Corazon. Estas increiblemente guapa hoy, pero para mi estas asi todos los dias. Ha sido un largo camino, pero al final hemos llegado y se que sea lo que sea que nos depare la vida y el futuro  lo viviremos muy felices juntos. Aqui hay una cita de Robert Burns. “ Envejece conmigo, lo mejor esta por venir”

Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you again for being here today, for the wonderful gifts, for your good wishes and most of all for your friendship now and in the future. Please charge your glasses and stand and toast to a wonderful evening together….Slainte va – Salud!

Senoras y senores , gracias otra vez por estar aqui con nosotros de nuevo , por los maravillosos regalos, vuestros buenos deseos y sobre todo por vuestra amistad  ahora en el presente y en el futuro. Por favor llenar las copas y levantaros a brindar  por una maravillosa tarde juntos.
