On their debut mini-album, Donkey Stock, Absentee manage to seem familiar yet refreshing. Lyrics full of late night aggression, recriminations and self doubt, "It's the booze talking" wisdom, great woozy backing vocals and wry social commentary (Something to Bang) and audaciousness (My Dead Wife end with a slowed down version of "You're the One That I Want" that transports it efficiently from karaoke land into a desperate plea). 6 tracks of great joy and depression, with alt. country influences. |
